Mafra, Ericeira and Sintra

At your accommodation in the Lisbon area or a meeting point

Guided Tour by car

8 - 9 hours

I will pick you up from your hotel in Lisbon or the surrounding area, and we’ll begin our journey to Mafra, a town famous for its impressive Baroque National Palace-Monastery and its rich craft tradition. The region is especially known for its pottery, with origins dating back to the Neolithic period. Even today, numerous ceramic workshops bear witness to this heritage.

At the magnificent Palácio Nacional de Mafra, we can either visit the church or make a brief photo stop. You may also choose to explore the entire monument (in which case we will not stop in Sintra) – a masterpiece that houses one of the most beautiful libraries in Europe and stands as a symbol of Portugal’s exquisite craftsmanship. The palace was built through the skill of countless stonemasons, carpenters, sculptors, and bell founders, who together created one of the largest Baroque buildings in Europe. The palace church is also home to six unique pipe organs, specially designed for this space – an acoustic treasure admired to this day.

After the imposing Palácio Nacional de Mafra, we’ll stop at a charming miniature village. This open-air museum was created by renowned ceramic artist José Franco and not only showcases traditional Portuguese architecture but also lovingly depicts everyday Portuguese life and culture in exquisite detail.

Our journey then continues to Ericeira – a picturesque fishing village that has also gained fame as a surfing hotspot. Here, you can stroll through charming streets, take in the Atlantic views, and, if you wish, enjoy a lunch break with freshly caught fish or seafood.

Depending on the time available, our tour may conclude with a drive through Sintra, where we can admire some of its world-famous monuments from the outside before returning to Lisbon.

Note:

  • The order and selection of stops can be adjusted according to your wishes and available time.

  • As an additional option, especially for families with young children, a visit to the Tapada de Mafra can be included. This former royal hunting ground is now a protected nature park, home to deer, wild boar, and many other animals within a vast forested area. It offers child-friendly trails for discovering nature. Please note that entry fees apply, and visiting the Tapada means that Sintra will not be part of the route.
